Keystones & Quoining
Historically a keystone was the centre block at the top of an Arch that locked the structure in place. Today the keystone is used as an ornamental feature used to emphasise major openings such as windows and garage openings, and is more commonly used over
porticos and entries.
Quoining
Quoins or Quoining is the term given to the imitation corner stones. Normally associated with Colonial style homes, these features have now become popular with modern homes. The profiles are square trenched (generally created by leaving a gap between quoins), and are used on the corners of a building or piers. Chamfered edges will give a softer look and create a “V” shape between the quoins. Stepped quoins (Colonial style) are created by having quoins at alternating lengths to simulate the end and front of a solid block laid in an alternating fashion.
